Hazleton Standard-Speaker adopts 4-section format
Beginning Monday, Feb. 2, the Hazelton Standard-Speaker will be printed at the Times-Shamrock production facility in Waverly. By moving production, the newspaper will have twice the color capacity than it currently does.

The Standard-Speaker expects less than 10 employees will lose their jobs. Those employees will be given opportunities to fill open positions at papers within the Times-Shamrock group.

Musselman: It’s all about transparency, or is it?
Editorial writers have noted the Obama Administration’s renewed commitment to open government, but a troubling area needs attention, namely, plans made last year by the U.S. Treasury Department to put foreclosure notices on its Web site, rather than the traditional newspaper publication. For many reasons, newspaper publication protects the homeowner or borrower— these are explained in the letter from PNA Chairman Sandra Hardy and President Tim Williams to Attorney General Corbett, asking him to join attorney generals from many other states, objecting to such a move.

Back here in Pennsylvania, another two-year legislative session kicked off for real with the introduction of bills and scheduling of hearings. First out of the gate was the Senate Leadership’s ‘reform’ package, Senate Bills 101-110, highlighted this week by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Let’s hope they receive prompt and serious consideration.

Next week we'll share with you a disturbing development in Connecticut, where that state's courts have eliminated the requirement that foreclosure notices be run as public notice advertisements in a newspaper. It's truly a scary thought.

Obama's example can inspire change in ad industry
On Jan. 20, we gained an inspirational president who symbolizes change and who calls on citizens to help him in that quest. "Yes we can." became three little words that gave Barack Obama the power to connect with the people, and win.

We should take example and translate Obama's excellent marketing tactics into the ad world. How can the ad industry use this as an opportunity to connect with today's diverse market and become more inspirational in motivating people?

The future of newspapers: News you can endow?
It seems that today we are approaching the point of having a government without newspapers. Between the burden of increased debt and decreased profit margins weighing on American newspapers, it's no wonder that the Internet has become that much more appealing as a news source. While there is no one solution to turn newspapers around, there are options, for example, making them into nonprofit endowed institutions. What do you think about that idea?
